The Future Of AC Motors and Rare Earth Elements

Rare earth metals have invaded the 21st century and things will never be the same again. Most of modern day technology gadgets, tools, equipment and vehicles make used of rare earth metals in order to functions. Imagine the cell phones, laptops, tablets, TVs, wind turbines, solar cells and hybrid cars without rare earth metals, just simply not possible.

Rare earth metals have no solid or concrete definition, except that they are metals used in small amounts or quantities and they can be found together with other earth metals  They include 17 elements that can be found in the periodic table of elements, and a lot of other by product metals found in gold, copper, zinc, iron and phosphates.
These are very common elements and metals, but the problem is they are hard to find and when they are found, they do not come in sufficient amount.

Typical Electric Motor
AC motors or alternating current motors are low-priced yet high-efficiency machineries used in a wide variety of applications and uses. AC motors come in very simple designs, and they consist of a magnetically forced, copper wounded rotor and stator mechanism.
The input alternating current in AC motors generates a revolving magnetic field above the stator that will eventually move the rotor. The rotor is connected with an external shaft.
Use of rare earth elements allows for production of heavy duty magnets. These magnets are highly useful for many tools and equipments such as electric cars and wind turbines.
There are AC motors that make use of permanent magnets made out of rare earth metals. Use of rare earth metals in AC motors allows for greater performance and power from relatively lighter and smaller motor. This then is a clear indication that rare metals are highly useful for running machineries.
With permanent magnet AC motor, it has a rotor that has the magnets made out of rare earth metal alloys. The magnet material can be embedded within the laminations of the rotor or mounted at the surface of the lamination stack of the rotor. Electric power is then effectively distributed through stator windings.
